Yale Blue on both necklines
Navy is the shade where a photograph is least likely to mislead you: deep, low-chroma colours look much the same on every screen. Both shots are from the Yale Blue lot.
The navy trap, in one paragraph
Almost every knitwear catalogue has two dark shades and calls both of them navy. Ours had that problem too, and we fixed it before building this page rather than after the returns arrived.
Yale Blue #2e3758 — red 46, green 55, blue 88. Blue dominates and green sits above red, which is the signature of a genuine navy with a little slate in it.
Midnight #221b2c — red 34, green 27, blue 44. Blue still leads, but red now sits above green, and red plus blue is purple. That is an aubergine so dark it passes for black in a hallway. The parent's own code for it is Navy-blue(dark)-90d. It is a perfectly good colour under an honest name and a return under a dishonest one.
Why navy is the one to own first
If you buy one cashmere sweater and you want it to earn its price, buy the navy. It is the only colour that goes under grey tailoring, brown tailoring, tweed, a leather jacket and an overcoat without any thought, and it is the only dark shade that does not read as severe in daylight.
- Navy crew with grey flannel trousers. The default. There is nothing to say about it because there is nothing wrong with it.
- Navy crew with tan chinos and brown shoes. The warmer version, and better in autumn than the grey one.

- Navy with raw indigo denim. Works, and works better if there is a visible shirt or a belt between the two blues.
- Not navy under a navy blazer unless the two are deliberately a long way apart in value.
Who it suits
Everyone, and it is the honest answer rather than a lazy one. Navy is dark enough to give high-contrast colouring something to work against and soft enough that it does not drain fair or grey-haired men the way Black Cashmere Sweaters for Men can. It is the shade we would put a first-time buyer in.
If the navy is already in the wardrobe and you want a second colour that behaves the same way — quiet enough to sit under anything, distinct enough not to look like a repeat — the one to look at is Green Cashmere Sweaters for Men. The safest colour to buy unseen
Every colour page on this site tells you the screen may be lying. Navy is the exception worth naming. Deep, low-saturation shades survive the trip through a camera sensor, a JPEG and your display better than anything bright, because there is very little chroma to clip. Ply and GSM are what buyers use to judge whether a sweater is substantial. The parent catalogue does not state either for any men's sweater, so we leave them blank rather than estimate them.
A little pilling in the first two or three wears is normal, and it is less visible on this shade than on a black or an indigo. Why it happens and what stops it.

Why isn't Midnight sold as navy?
Because it is not navy. The parent catalogue codes #221b2c as Navy-blue(dark)-90d, but the hex has red at 34, green at 27 and blue at 44 — more red than green means purple. It is a near-black aubergine. We renamed it Midnight and we sell it under that name, because a man who orders navy and opens a box containing dark purple sends the box back.
Navy or black?
Navy, for almost everyone and almost every purpose. It shows lint and pilling less than black, it reads less severe in daylight, and it goes under grey, brown and tweed tailoring where black only really works under grey. Black wins on exactly one thing: it hides stains better.
Can I wear a navy sweater with a navy jacket?
Only if the two navies are deliberately far apart in value — a mid navy sweater under a very dark jacket, with a pale shirt showing. Two similar navies at close range look like a match that failed. If in doubt, put grey trousers under it and stop there.
Does the quarter zip come in navy?
No. The quarter zip is made in one colourway only, a muted grey-blue, listed on the grey hub. Navy is available on the crew neck and the V-neck.
